Drawing Notes:
This is the string instrument called a Lyre (rhymes with fire). The strings are represented by the 5 columns of full cells in the center of the form. The sound is described as mellow and soothing. The bottom is a hollow soundbox or resonator that was made from turtle shells in ancient Greece.
Various shapes and sizes of this instrument are available with three to twenty-four strings, seven strings being popular.

Drawing Notes:
Our piano could be any one of the seven grand pianos mentioned below. The keyboard is at the bottom of the page. Our drawing has only 29 of the 88 keys shown due to the size of the drawing.
Fun Facts:
There are two primary types of pianos: upright and grand. Upright pianos, also called vertical pianos, are constructed with the strings oriented vertically. Grand pianos, known as horizontal pianos, are oriented horizontally with the strings extending out from the keyboard.
Within the grand piano family, there are seven different size classifications of grand pianos. The exact sizes may vary, but here are the commonly accepted classifications of grand pianos:
Petit grand: The smallest size of grand piano, petit grand pianos range from about 4′ 5″ to 4′ 11″ in length.
Baby grand: One of the most popular grand pianos for domestic use, baby grand pianos measure between 5″ and 5′ 5″.
Medium grand: Also known as a classic grand, ranges from 5′ 6″ to about 5′ 8″.
Professional grand: also referred to as full grand pianos and measure between 5′ 9″ and 6′ 2″ long.
Parlor grand: Measuring between 6’3″ and 6′ 10″, parlor grand pianos are another popular choice for home use.
Semi-concert grand: Also known as a ballroom grand, a semi-concert grand measures between 6′ 11″ and 7′ 8″ in length.
Concert grand: The largest size of grand piano, concert grand pianos typically measure about 8’11” to 9″, but can sometimes be even larger.

Drawing Notes:
Fun Facts:
Xylophone keys are often made of rose wood. Saint-Saens used the xylophone to sound like a skeleton and then like fossils. Humperdinck used it earlier ins his orchestral accompaniments for his opera Hansel and Grettel.

End design.
Drawing Notes:
I have drawn three pairs of cymbals vertically on the page. Each set of cymbals are facing each other. Starting from the top, first there is the edge, then the bow (the curved area between the bell and edge) and the bell (the raised area at the center of a cymbal), The thickness, shape, and material of each of these elements all effect the tone of the cymbal.
Fun Facts:
Modern cymbals range from 30cm to 65cm in diameter, but orchestra cymbals generally range from 40cm to 50cm, which enables brilliance and resonance in an orchestral setting.

Drawing Notes:
The top row of the drawing is the tone bars. Marimbas use different lengths of wood for each tone. The next row shows the frame to hold all the pieces. Below that are the two outside legs of the frame with the resonator tubes hanging in the middle.
Fun Facts:
Below each bar is a resonator pipe that amplifies harmonics of its sound. Marimba mallets are constructed of three parts: the core, shaft, and wrapping. The mallets’ sound is affected by the weight, shape, and type of wrapping on the mallet heads.

Row 22: space 5 times, dots 456, L [123].
End design.
Drawing Notes:
Starting at the top, the first bump is decorative, the next GG’s and G’s are the tuning posts for the strings. The neck remains straight as it approaches the body. There are typically two slots in the body shaped as “S’s” for the sound to escape.
Fun Facts:
Antonio Stradivarius determined the size of today’s cello.
Although quite popular in classical music, the cello is also used in rock music.

Drawing Notes:
The musician has left the trumpet sitting on the floor with the mouthpiece at the top of the page and the valves facing to the right. Follow the hollow tube from the mouthpiece down the page until it does a half circle to the left, comes back up the page and does a half circle to the right. At this point, the tube runs behind the original tube and ends up at the bottom of the page in the flared portion known as the bell.
Air thru the shorter inner tube is controlled by the various positions of the valves.

Drawing Notes:
A conductor’s baton (or wand) is a stick between 12 and 18 inches long which comes to a point. Handles are between three-quarters and two and one-half inches long depending on style and shape. Unfortunately, I found no information on thickness. Since a baton only weighs in at one-half to one and one-half ounces, they cannot be very thick.
The first four drawings on the page are my evolution in trying to draw a baton. If I had not been requested to try, I doubt you would have this page. The shaft should be centered within the handle, thus limiting drawing location. As you can tell, the first three drawings leave a thick shaft. The fourth and fifth drawing have a nice thin shaft but do not due justice to the handle shapes. The sixth and final drawing is my attempt to draw just the handle. The picture reference called it a “Lancio” and it is made of aluminum. The vertical lines are black accent stripes.
Fun Facts:
Thanks to the Mollard Conducting Batons company web site, I now know that batons come in many gorgeous hardwoods, carbon fiber and can be any color as well as fluorescent. So much for the simple “stick”.

Drawing Notes:
Our drawing depicts a pair of identical maracas drawn side by side. The shell is at the top with the handle at the bottom. The shells are usually made from a hollowed-out gourd or coconut with seeds or beads inside.
To draw only the first maraca, stop each line at the second set of spaces. In row 4 this is the only space.

Fun Facts:
Cellos are the second largest stringed instrument in the world.
At one time, celli had five strings.
Unlike a guitar, it has no frets or other markers on the fingerboard.
The top plate is often made of spruce.

Drawing Notes:
Starting at the top, the first bump is decorative, the next four GG’s are the tuning posts for the strings. The neck gets slightly larger as it approaches the body. This drawing shows two of the four strings down the length of the body. There are typically two slots in the body shaped as “S’s” for the sound to escape.
Fun Facts:
Violins come in nine different sizes from 14 inches to 23 inches.
The violin is the smallest and highest-pitched string instrument typically used in Western music.
Unlike a guitar, it has no frets or other markers on the fingerboard.
Sometimes, the violin is playfully called a “fiddle”.

Drawing Notes:
The trumpet is laying on its side with the mouthpiece on the left. The three buttons on the top are called the valves. Pushing one of these changes the way the air travels thru the tubing, defining the notes. Although I drew these as hollow tubes, no air goes thru them, they just hold the inner parts of the valves.
The mouthpiece is formed by rows 3 and 4. Following the tube to the right you first notice the notch between cells 2 and 3. This is the mouthpiece receiver where the two pieces join. Mouthpieces are removable. Follow the air path to the right and you come to a dot 6 and dot 4 just as the tube widens. This indicates that the tube is curved downward to the bottom tube of the drawing. Follow the tube left across the page and it curves upward to the top again. At this point, the tube is behind the one that is drawn and continues to the right back to the bell.

Drawing Notes:
The musician has left the trumpet sitting on the floor with the mouthpiece at the top of the page and the valves facing to the left. The three tubes sticking out to the right are the containers for the valve springs. Being a silhouette drawing, you cannot follow the tubing pattern of the air flow.

Drawing Notes:
Our bugle is held upright with the mouthpiece at the bottom of the page. Starting at the top you can follow the tubing from the flared end as it curves to the right, heads back up the page then curves to the left. At this point is passes behind the wider tubing and heads down the page to the mouthpiece.
Fun facts:
Early bugles date from around 1750 when the light infantry first bent a long horn. This bugle is from around 1800 of the once-looped trumpet shape. The British modified this to a twice-coiled design in 1858.
Though bugle calls are often heard in orchestral music, it is the trumpets and horns which play them. One exception is Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde.
Military units make good use of the bugle, and it isn’t just for playing Taps.

Drawing Notes:
Starting at the top, you feel an oval shape to represent the membrane or skin called the head. This is stretched over a large bowl similar to a copper kettle. This drum has a frame holding it up on wheels for easy movement.
Fun Fact:
The musician who plays this instrument is a “timpanist”.

Drawing Notes:
The top cymbal is facing downwards. The bottom cymbal is facing upwards. The single full cell in row 3 is part of the stand and mechanism that controls the position of the two cymbals. These cymbals can be open as drawn or closed to touch each other.
Fun Facts:
A hi-hat or high-hat is a combination of two cymbals and a pedal, all mounted on a metal stand.

End design.
Drawing Notes:
Starting at the top, the first bump is decorative, the next four GG’s are the tuning posts for the strings. The neck gets slightly larger as it approaches the body.
