Introduction to Triangles

This page is a study of triangles drawn using our standard braille layout. It is broken down into various sections depending on the type or style of the triangle that is different from all the others.

This project came about because I wanted to draw a perfect braille Star of David and needed equilateral triangles. It is amazing how each base position changes a shape and how the final size is affected. Please see the Six-Pointed Star and Star of David pages to see the end results.

An isosceles triangle is a triangle with two sides of equal length. I have drawn these as they are the easiest when using braille. You will note the one point (top or bottom) does not have a true point, because it would fall between the rows.

An equilateral triangle is a triangle in which all three sides have the same length, and all three angles are equal. This is one condition for the Star of David to be true. What we have is the closest I could come in braille and still have enough dots on the two sides to know what is drawn. A note to all you geometry teachers: the top and bottom point angles are 62 degrees and the two base angles are 59 degrees.

Triangle one is 1 row, 2 cells. Without a true single dot top peak, this is not much.

Triangle two is 2 rows, 4 cells. Although better, the lack of a peak is still a problem. To me the two sides curve inward at the bottom.

Triangle three is 3 rows, 6 cells.

Triangle four is 4 rows, 8 cells.

Triangle five is 5 rows, 10 cells.

Triangle one, DD does not look or feel like a triangle. Triangle two, DD has a better look and feel but I do not think it quite makes the cut.

I tried to make these five triangles look and feel better by adding additional dots to the bottom row, however, I did not like the results any better. See the drawing called Double Dot failure for additional comments.

Drawing Notes:

There are five failures on this drawing.

Failure 1 is 1 row, 4 cells. Although technically triangular, the sides feel curved.

Failure 2 is 2 rows, 6 cells. With the missing top point and the curving sides, it reminds me more of the Darth Vader style helmet than a triangle.

Failure 3 is 3 rows, 8 cells. Just trying to tell if size will help. Fill in the center and remove the two side dots presents the beginning of an arrowhead.

Failure 4 is 4 rows, 10 cells. Although the sides are starting to appear straighter, the bottom row still has the flair.

Failure 5 is 5 rows, 12 cells. Size does not help! At this point I know this design will not work.

Fun Facts:

Draw a line from dot 6 in the base’s first cell to dot 4 in the first row, first cell. Mirror this line on the right side also. I then extend each side upward until they touch, somewhere between rows. Using this layout for projecting a straight line gives me an upper angle of 68.9 degrees and the two base angles of 55.5 degrees.
