There are four patterns on this page.
Moon Phases 01
By: Richard Hinkle
Design is 15 rows, 16 cells.
Note: Full size picture is the last full page of this document.
Introductory drawing note:
We have written the directions in two vertical columns. The first column uses cells one through ten. The second column uses cells eleven through sixteen.
Each vertical column contains four phases of the moon’s cycle. All eight phases of the moon fit on one page, but you may want to draw them on two separate pages; or, you may want to draw each moon phase on a separate flash card.
Begin design:
Full Moon is in the first column, spaces to cell ten to finish that column; then New Moon is in the second column.
Row 1: space 1 time, WAS [356], WITH [23456], OF [12356], HIS [236], space 5 times to cell ten; space 1 time, IN [35], dot 4, A [1], EN [26].
Row 2: dots 456, full cell 4 times, L [123], space 4 times to cell ten; dots 46, space 4 times, K [13].
Row 3: space 1 time, D [145], ER [12456], Q [12345], F [124], space 5 times to cell ten; E [15], dot 6, dot 3, I [24].
Row 4: Leave this row blank.
Waxing Gibbous Moon is in the first column, spaces to cell ten to finish this column; then Waning Crescent Moon is in the second column.
Row 5: space 1 time, IN [35], dots 46, OF [12356], HIS [236], space 5 times to cell ten; space 1 time, WAS [356], T [2345], EN [26].
Row 6: dots 46, space 1 time, full cell 3 times, L [123], space 4 times to cell ten; dots 456, full cell 1 time, space 3 times, K [13].
Row 7: space 1 time, E [15], dots 46, Q [12345], F [124], space 5 times to cell ten; space 1 time, E [15], dots 46, Q [12345], F [124], D [145], OU [1256], dot 3, I [24].
Row 8: Leave this row blank.
First Quarter moon is in the first column, spaces to cell ten to finish this column; then Third Quarter Moon is in the second column.
Row 9: space 1 time, IN [35], dot 4, OF [12356], HIS [236], E [15], dots 46, Q [12345], F [124], WAS [356], WITH [23456], A [1], EN [26].
Row 10: dots 46, space 2 times, full cell 2 times, L [123], space 4 times to cell ten; dots 456, full cell 2 times, space 2 times, K [13].
Row 11: space 1 time, E [15], dots 46, Q [12345], F [124], E [15], dots 46, Q [12345], F [124], D [145], ER [12456], dot 3, I [24].
Row 12: Leave this row blank.
Waxing Crescent Moon is in the first column, spaces to cell ten; then Waning Gibbous Moon is in the second column.
Row 13: space 1 time, IN [35], dot 4, H [1256], HIS [236], space 5 times to cell ten; space 1 time, D [145], ER [12456], K [13], EN [26].
Row 14: dots 46, space 3 times, full cell, L [123], space 4 times to cell ten; dots 456, full cell 3 times, space 1 time, K [13].
Row 15: space 1 time, E [15], dot 6, T [2345], F [124], space 5 times to cell ten; space 1 time, D [145], ER [12456], K [13], I [24],
End design.
Drawing Notes:
Each Moon is 3 rows by 6 cells. If you start the second moon at cell eleven as if it is your first cell, they are easy to draw individually and will fit on an index card.

Drawing Notes:
The single dot portion of each circle is not seen, it is only provided to allow you to gather perspective on which portion of the moon you would see.
The earth is the circle in the center with the E in the middle.
The moon at 12:00 is called the 1st. Quarter moon.
The moon at 1:30 is a Waxing Crescent moon.
The moon at 3:00 is a New moon, you would not see anything.
The moon at 4:30 is a Waning Crescent moon.
The moon at 6:00 is the 3rd. Quarter moon.
The moon a 7:30 is a Waning Gibbous moon.
The moon at 9:00 is the Full moon, you see a full circle in the sky.
The moon at 10:30 is a Waxing Gibbous moon.
Ask your science or astronomy teacher to explain the why of the moon’s phases and how they affect the oceans’ tides.

Marie’s drawing notes:
This spaceship takes 5 lines down and 12 spaces across. It has a roundness to its shape and almost looks like an ornament hanging in the air.
