Our shell now has 18 chambers represented by solid areas and the shell is empty space. Can you still start at the GG on row one, proceed along the outside edge in a clockwise manner and end up in the center? This is the shape of a spiral.

Fun Facts:
The drawing is a nautilus shell cut in half. It has 18 chambers. If you start at the top of the full cell in row 1, can you follow the outline clockwise to the center? This naturally occurring logarithmic spiral is found throughout nature in shells, hurricanes, spiral galaxies, and in many plants such as sunflowers.
If you are into math, research the Fibonacci Sequence for the mathematical representation of this spiral.
The chambered or pearly nautilus is a cephalopod (a type of mollusk)—a distant cousin to squids, octopi, and cuttlefish. Unlike its color-changing cousins, though, the soft-bodied nautilus lives inside its hard external shell. The shell itself has many closed interior chambers or “compartments.”
The animal resides in the shell’s largest chamber, while the other chambers function like the ballast tanks of a submarine. This is the secret to how the nautilus swims.
