Fun Facts:
Male pigs are called boars; female pigs are called sows. Newborns are called piglets and are not called shoats until their mother stops nursing them.
When a piglet is born, it weighs about two and a half pounds. It doubles its weight in the first week.
In the United States, farmers usually feed their pigs a corn-based diet, but in Europe their diet is barley-based.
Pigs live all over the world. they are smart animals and give humans many good things like meat, lard, leather, and medicine.
Pigs are clean animals and only take mud baths when they are hot.

Fun Facts:
A sickle is a farming tool with a C-shaped blade mounted on a small handle (about the size of a hammer handle). It’s meant to be used with one hand, typically to harvest bundles of plants (like grasses or grains) by cutting them at the base.
The sickle appeared on the flag of the Soviet Union along with a hammer in an overlapping symbol that became known as the hammer and sickle. The hammer was meant to represent industrial workers (who worked in factories), while the sickle was meant to represent the peasants (who worked the land). The hammer and sickle is known as a symbol of Communism.
The name Sickle is also used as the name of a group of stars in the constellation Leo that is shaped like the tool.
The shape of the sickle is also behind the name of the medical condition sickle cell anemia, in which the blood cells become shaped like sickles.
A scythe is a farming tool with a long, slightly curved blade that’s mounted on a long pole (called a snath). Real-life versions usually have two shorter hand-sized handles attached to the pole—one in the middle and one at the end. Either way, you have to use two hands to properly wield a scythe.
The scythe is used to cut grasses and grains—it’s designed so the blade moves in a plane parallel to the ground.
The verb reap is another word for harvest. The depiction of the Grim Reaper with a scythe isn’t traditionally meant to indicate that the scythe is going to be used to kill the person whom Death has come for—it’s simply supposed to symbolize that the Grim Reaper harvests souls. But, yes, that big blade does look pretty scary with a Halloween costume.

Marie’s drawing notes:
The cowboy has a huge hat, a beard, a bandanna, boots, is holding his reins for his horse. His boot that is showing even has a heel. This side view shows the horse standing still with his head poised and his tail hanging straight down. They’re ready to travel. In this figure, as in all other larger drawings, we deliberately attempted centering the drawing for better eye appeal, and in order to stress the importance of pictures looking attractive because of attention to such details. Because it is a side view, centering is more difficult. the figures are not mirrored, the same on the right and on the left, except, reversed.
Centering, therefore, has to be calculated more carefully.

This rabbit takes 6 lines down and 14 spaces across. It is a side view of a bunny lying down with its ears straight up and its fluffy tail behind. The back is hunched up a bit in readiness to jump. We use it in our books as a symbol of intermediate work, jumping from easy material into what is harder and will bring us to more difficult material later.

Marie’s drawing note:
The Country Gentleman was a drawing I took to Kentucky to show him off. The person examining him said, ” I believe I know that feller! ” You see him with
his jug on one side, his rifle held in his hand on the other side. See the patches in his pants, his whiskers, his slouched hat. He was fun to draw.
Modification notes:
The original drawing was 24 rows and 35 cells. To make the gentleman fit on our page, I removed 6 spaces from the first 14 rows. I removed row 15 of the original drawing entirely. I also removed 6 spaces between the jug and the legs.
The jug reminds me of the ceramic jugs with a cork stopper that weighed around five pounds empty and held around five gallons of liquid. Filled, the jug could have weighed forty-five pounds or more.
