Boat

Design is 5 Rows, 16 cells.

Note: Full size picture is the last full page of this document.

Begin design:

Row 1: space 7 times, full cell.

Row 2: space 6 times, full cell 3 times.

Row 4: CH [16], full cell 14 times, ST [34].

Row 5: space 1 time, CH [16], full cell 12 times, ST [34].

End design.

Marie’s drawing notes:

This drawing is suitable for beginning braillists and for budding artists. It is fun to do and it also teaches spacing and manipulation of the braille writer. It is easily recognizable as a boat. To add some action, make smoke come out of the smoke-stack on top using (ow)(ow)(ow)iiaa leaving a trail of smoke behind the boat. Now add some water, a row of eieieieieiei making sure that you allow for the boat. Try centering the boat on the page with the wavy water line to the left and to the right of it. Use the fifth line for the water, stop just before the boat (ch) contraction, beginning it again after the (st).

Drawing Notes:

I call this a toy scooter as it was powered by a person, and not motorized as our other drawing of a scooter. This reminds me of the four wheeled version I had as a child where the front wheels were steerable by using the two handles.

Rene’s Drawing Notes:

The Braille drawing shows a child pulling a sledge behind them. The child is walking to the right with its body leaning slightly forward. Next to the body, the head, two arms and two legs can be felt. The child is holding a rope in its hand, which is pointing backwards. The rope is attached to the horns of the sledge. Both sledge and child are shown from the right-hand side. It is a horned sledge, whose distinctive, round horns are ideal for holding on to. The upper line represents the seat, while the lower line represents a runner.

Marie’s drawing notes:

The sailboat is a simple figure. It can be made as large as you want by using dots 4-5-6 for the mast, increasing the number of spaces by one for each line added. Make the boat length correspond to the width of the sail.

The arms of both the man and woman are raised up. The man has straight legs and turned out feet. The woman has a skirt made by using the contraction for “THE” and the letter “Z”. Stick figures can be used in all kinds of drawings. They can hold flags, signs, stand on top of things- you’ll find all kinds of uses for them.

The idea can be expanded to make a school bus, using a series of contractions for (a full cell) as windows. It can be made more elaborate with the sloping hood and fancy windows of a car.

Marie’s drawing notes:

This teddy bear has personality. He has a gleam in his eyes, eyebrows, a perky look about him. You can add to him by drawing a bow for a tie. You can put a bow on his head and a flair of skirt around his hind feet and he becomes a she. We call them Guildabear and we take them around with us when we display our books. They have great appeal, [and] good P.R.

Drawing notes:

We removed 8 spaces from the front to fit our page.

We offer several hundred free patterns.
